First Gameday

On Saturday, May 5th, I received the opportunity to work during the 7:05 game against the Texas Rangers. The Tribe had won the night before against Texas, and also won the previous series in Chicago, so when the weather reports had shown it would be a pleasant evening, Nancy Schneider, the retail managers and one of my two supervisors, figured correctly that there would be a flash crowd. The total attendance was over 21,000 people, which was 50% more than they were projecting.

It turned out to be a cool night, and most people had shown up in shorts and a T-shirt, so all of the stores were packed. My job that night was to be a supervisorthat is, I was making rounds through the stadium to check the diligence of employees and to help different booths and stores when busy. Naturally, every store was overflowing with people, trying to buy blankets and sweatshirts, so I had to jump in, not knowing if I would sink or swim.

The night ended well, though. I sold many items and helped many people stay warm during their ballpark experience. (I also helped the Cleveland Indians rip off thousands off people; blankets are $50!) In total, the team made over $110,000 that night off of merchandise alone. I ended the night by going downstairs to buy a dollar dog from Dorothy's Diner (top benefit of working games), and then buying a ticket and watching the second half of the game as a fan.
