This week has started out slow. I had two back to back AP exams on Monday (Environmental Science and Psychology) and a Calc one this Wednesday morning. Between the tests and becoming baseball sectional champs on Monday and Tuesday, I haven't had much time to invest in the farm. The good news is, the coop should be finalized tomorrow with all off the handles, latches, and windows it needs to house Allie's nine chickens. They will no longer be called chicks because they're getting huge. Tuesday morning I took my car back behind the white house so that I could harvest salvageable building materials (basically bricks and concrete) from the old falling apart greenhouse that has been left to the woods to be taken over. We plan on using those bricks and concrete in the garden on our raised beds and walkways. For the walkways, we've been using the kitchen's cardboard food boxes to lay down on where our paths in the garden will be. Sometime soon Coach Wilson's buddy is going to deliver 8 cubic yards or so of wood chips for us to put on the walkways, which will keep the weeds off the path, and out of the beds. We also invested some of Tuesday in coming up with a plan of attack on how to approach round two of Hawken seed selling. Our motto is "spread our seed" and you may receive an email blast concerning the seeds you can purchase. Stuart has made the plans for what the garden will have in it, and strategically decided where it will be keeping in mind the functions of the plants. For example, why buy fencing for around the garden to keep the deer out when fruit trees can serve the same purpose? These are sustainable techniques being implemented. Nate has a complex and seemingly gorgeous Trellis/Garden Gate entrance plan put together. Soon he will go buy the lumbar for that and begin building. Despite breaking her foot, Allie has powered through her daily tasks. We will be taking field trips to CWR Squire Farm in Hunting Valley and Tommy and Greg's Urban Farm in East Cleveland soon to learn from them about what works best. We're looking forward to it. I'll let you know when the bees arrive. Until then... this is Liam Green signing off and heading to the girls Lax game.
