In light of my recent experience in training, where I was
subjected to endless monologues on such interesting topics as uniforms and
navigation, I will try to limit this post to something around that 200 word
minimum I have been so obnoxiously disregarding.
As I hinted
above, yesterday was another training day. Because I could not go in to the
Newseum today because of an AP, I’ll talk a little about training Tuesday. I’m
sure you’ll all be delighted to know that I graduated! Thank you, thank you,
I’ll try to include a picture of the certificate. The final day of orientation
included two more tours, one focusing on what we’ll be doing in each gallery,
and the other showing us the employee areas. We were also given the opportunity
to roam the museum independently to complete a “scavanger hunt” of sorts. Sami
and I were both drawn to the Pulizter Gallery, a collection of Pulizter prize
winning photojournalism pieces. In such an interactive and almost
overly-stimulating museum this gallery is striking because of it’s
introspective nature. Here’s a link to their online portion http://www.newseum.org/exhibits-and-theaters/permanent-exhibits/pulitzer/index.html,
though there is no way to include the 15+ hours of interviews and video they
have available on kiosks in the gallery.
Overall, it was a long but again informative day. Tomorrow
begins day one of work, though Sami and I will only shadow and won’t have our
own posts until Friday. I’m confident that soon after I will have just about
every continuously looping film memorized and will be able to point a visitor
to the restrooms in record time.
The above is Kevin Carter's 1994 Pulitzer winning photo, one of my favorite's in the gallery. The image and a brief summary of the story behind it can be accessed here.
